Chapter Eleven

The lines between my personal and professional life continued to blur into a confusing blur as the days passed.

Gabrielle came by the house more and more to discuss the mounting threat from outside my family. According to his sources, my enemies were mobilizing, some of them awkwardly and on their own, but some of them with the sleek, efficient force of a well-oiled machine. They had big plans; coups and product interceptions and depositions, and I was right in the crosshairs of their schemes to expand their own criminal enterprises into Scalzi territory. The mole had not yet been found.

The new club opening was a week away. By day, Stasi begged me for more freedom - the car keys, a longer curfew - and by night I took pleasure in the wild abandon of Claire in my bed. No aspect of my life showed any sign of slowing down, and I was overtaken with the growing dread that soon, they would all crash into each other in one gigantic collision. The problem was, I couldn’t get off any part of the wild ride.

My breathless encounters with Claire had continued despite my promise to myself to cut them off, and they were just getting more passionate and drawn out. It took all the effort in my body not to press a kiss to the back of her neck when I saw her sitting at the table studying with Stasi or to take her by the hips and press her against the wall for a quick makeout session when I passed her in the hallways.

I couldn’t get enough of her; every time I stole one last kiss or pulled her into my room one more time I promised myself it would be the last time, but all those moments ever did was make me want her more. She gave herself over to me with willing enthusiasm, studying my body and the quickest avenues to my pleasure with a student’s interest, and I could never deny her.

Meanwhile, the rumors got louder, and my paranoia got worse. Long nights breaking a sweat in bed with Claire were the only things that could keep my mind off my growing sense that my family wasn’t safe in our own home, but when Claire happily slept off these marathon sessions the next morning, I would stay up, wired and worrying and scheming.

The biggest looming event was, of course, the club opening. One long night I was supposed to be out of the house, leaving Stasi and Claire alone and vulnerable. Normally, I would feel safe having them at home with the guards, but I had no idea if there was a mole planted among them, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. So I stayed up, and I worried, and I wandered the grounds in the odd early hours to kill time while I tried to figure out what to do.

I found Claire in the garden on one of these early morning walks. She was drifting between the topiaries clutching a mug of steaming coffee in her hand.
